Ather Energy is one of the most successful Indian electric vehicle manufacturing startups. It was founded by Tarun Mehta & Swapnil Jain in 2013. The company headquarters is in Bangalore, Karnataka.

  • In 2014, the startup received Rs 4.5 million (US$63,000) from IIT Madras.
  • In December 2014, Sachin Bansal & Binny Bansal (Flipkart founders) invested $1 million as seed money. After that, Sachin Bansal again invested $32 million in May 2019.
  • In May 2015, Tiger Global invested $12 million in the company.
  • Hero MotoCorp has invested several times and it has a 35% stake in the company. In October 2016, Hero invested Rs 205 crores (US$ 29 million). It again invested Rs 130 crores (US$ 18million) in 2018 and Rs 85 crores (US$11.4 million) in July 2020. 

Currently, Ather has its manufacturing plant in Whitefield, Bangalore, which has a production capacity of 600 vehicles per week. But, it is setting up a new production plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu to increase the production capacity to 100,000 units annually.

Right now, Ather has 2 electric scooters- Ather 450 & Ather 450X.Also, Ather products are only available in Bangalore and Chennai.

The company has planned to expand it to 20 major cities by the end of 2021.

Popular Auto brand Bajaj entered the electric vehicle market in 2019 with its electric scooter Chetak. Bajaj stopped manufacturing the old and famous Chetak in 2005. But they started producing scooters again with the electric Chetak after more than a decade.

Rajiv Bajaj is currently the CEO of the firm. Chetak is a completely silent, and noise-free scooter.

It is manufactured at Bajaj’s advanced assembly line in Chakan, near Pune, Maharashtra. About 80% of the workers in the manufacturing plant are women.

Chetak is considered as one of the best electric scooters in the Indian market. It is loaded with all the latest features and has a very good range and high speed.

It is available in two different variants - Chetak Urbane and Chetak Premium.

BAJAJ CHETAK ELECTRIC

Chetak got a very good response from the public and soon after the launch, it got more than 2,000 bookings in just 15 days.

Also, Bajaj Auto invested $8 million in the bike-sharing startup Yulu in November 2019. Now Bajaj will make affordable and low-speed electric scooters for Yulu. At present, Yulu’s electric scooters are manufactured in China. So it is a great step towards the “Make In India” initiative.

As of now, Chetak is only available in Pune and Bangalore.

Hero Electric was the first Indian company to manufacture electric two-wheelers in India. Hero started working on an electric two-wheeler in 2000, and in 2007, they launched Hero Electric as a separate company.

At the moment, Mr. Sohinder Gill is the CEO, and Mr. Naveen Munjal is the Managing Director of the company.

Hero Electric headquarters are located in Gurugram, Haryana, and has a manufacturing plant in Ludhiana, Punjab. It has around 300 employees.

It is one of the conglomerates of Hero Eco Group, which consists of EVs, exports, bicycles, healthcare, and real estate.

Hero Electric is at number 1 position with a 45% market share in the electric two-wheelers market in India. A total amount of ₹1.6B has been invested in the company till now.

The company is looking to put a fresh investment of Rs 700 crores in the next three years and increase its manufacturing capacity to 500,000 annually from 100,000 units.

It makes both low-speed and high-speed electric scooters, with a price range from Rs 39,900 to 79,900.

Recently, they partnered with fintech startup Autovert Technologies to offer subscription-based finance plans. Also, they teamed up with OTO Capital to offer a leasing plan of electric two-wheelers for the new customers.

They also announced the launch of a mobile studio which will help them to take their electric scooter experience to customers in new localities.

Hero is planning to double the capacity over the next year by expanding the manufacturing unit either at its Ludhiana plant or by setting up a greenfield one in South India.

Popular Indian auto brand TVS launched its first electric scooter iQube in January 2020. iQube is one of the scooters with top-end quality and features.

Union Minister Mr. Nitin Gadkari launched this scooter in Bangalore in January. Currently, it is only available in Bangalore.

Mr. KN Radhakrishnan is the CEO of the firm. The company headquarters is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and the manufacturing plant is in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. TVS manufactures about 1,000 units of the vehicle per month.

iQube has a riding range of 75km on a single charge and a top speed of 78km/h. It is loaded with tons of latest features and several connectivities based features.

The company says that iQube’s technology, software, battery solutions, and programming all are made in India. The two-wheeler costs Rs 1.15 lakh (on-road).

TVS Motor has partnered with Bescom to create a charging infrastructure in Bangalore. It also unveiled home charging and public charging infrastructural support plans.

TVS Motor has also invested in electric two-wheeler start-up Ultraviolette Automotive.

The company is planning to develop a portfolio of new products in the electric segment in the coming years. They are working on TVS Creon e-scooter with 12kW electric motor powered and three lithium-ion batteries.

In 2006 Electrotherm entered the electric vehicle market in India under the brand name “Yo Bykes“. It was one of the earliest companies in our country to produce electric two-wheeler.

YoBykes was started with the purpose of creating high quality and affordable electric scooters in India.

Mr. Mukesh Bhandari is the CEO of the company, and Mr. Shailesh Bhandari is the managing director. The company has its headquarters in Gujarat, India.

YoBykes was the largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer in India in 2013.

It makes both low-speed and high-speed scooters. More than 200 people are employed here.

YO DRIFT

Electrotherm works with Canadian firm Electrovaya to manufacture lithium-ion polymer batteries.

Their battery manufacturing plant has the capacity to produce 10 Mw hours of power a month. The batteries are then sold in India and abroad.

It has recently launched two new models- Yo Edge DX and Yo Drift Dx in the Indian market. YoBykes products are easily available to purchase in all major cities of our country.

The company also says that it has the largest pan India service network.

PUR Energy Pvt Ltd is an electric scooter company in India. It was founded in 2015 by two IIT Bombay alumnus Dr. Nishanth Dongari and Rohit Vadera.

It was established at IIT Hyderabad. Shri V C Nannapaneni funded US$ 35million in this startup.

The firm has performed hybrid solar storage projects for many business groups, Universities, Hospitals, Residential Communities, NGOs, and Schools. After that, they started manufacturing electric two-wheeler under the name PURE EV and Lithium-Ion batteries as PURE Lithium.

It has a 40,000 sqft manufacturing plant in Kandi village near IIT Hyderabad.

It manufactures 2,000 units per month and aims to increase it to 10,000 units.

E PLUTO 7G

PurEnergy has a variety of electric products in the market, such as- Epluto 7g (electric scooter), Etrance (electric moped), Egnite, and Etron+ (electric bicycles).

The company has 120 outlets operational and they are planning to increase it to 200 by March 2021. These products are available in 14 major states in India.

They are aiming to sell 1,000 units per month by the end of 2020.

Also, PurEnergy is working on Electric Bike which would come out in early 2021. Recently they announced a new product- Pure EV ETrance+ priced at Rs 57,000.

Eeve is one of the electric scooter companies in India. It was founded by Mr. Jay Prakash Didwania and Mr. Harsh Vardhan Didwania in 2018.

It is based in Odisha. The manufacturing factory is located in Badachana, Chandikhol, Odisha.

Currently, it produces 12,000 units of scooters per year and they are planning to increase it to 60,000 annual units within the next 3 years.

Eeve has four electric scooters in the market- Xeniaa, 4U, Wind, and Your.

All 4 scooters are low-speed vehicles, with a top speed of 25km/h. All of them have a range of 60-70 km per charge.

EEVE XENIAA

So far the company has invested around Rs 70 crores and in the next two years, they are planning to invest another 150 crores.

Eeve has decided to move away from Chinese part dependence and they have managed to achieve 40% localisation, with localising parts like tires, motors, and IoT.

Currently, the company has a presence in 62 cities across the country, and they are in talks with entrepreneurs around the country to achieve the goal of 200+ dealers by the end of this year.

Eeve India has partnered with Zest Money for the financing of their products. Customers with no CIBIL score can finance the vehicle under this scheme.

They are also looking for the international market by taking entry into Bangladesh, Sri Lankan, and Indonesian markets.

They are coming out with two new models of electric two-wheelers Forseti and Tesoro in 2021. Both the scooters are completely developed in India.

BATTRE

BattRE is a Jaipur based electric scooter company. It was founded by Mr. Nishchal Choudhary in 2017.

The product portfolio of BattRE consists of e-rickshaws, e-scooters, e-cycles, lithium batteries, and solar-related products.

The startup is funded by Ex-President of Tata Motors Mr. Gajendra Chandel and Ex CEO of Airtel Mr. Anant Arora.

The amount invested by them is undisclosed. The startup is planning to use this fund to launch new models, increase production capacity, and expand the distribution & service network in India.

BATTRE ONE

BattRE has four electric scooters in the market- BattRE ONE, BattRE lo:ev, BattRE IOT, and BattRE gps:ie.

Gps:ie was recently launched by the company and they call it an Internet-connected electric scooter. They partnered with Aeris Communications (California based tech company) to make this scooter.

They also manufacture e-bicycles. Newtron, Kross, Huge, and Montra are electric bicycles by BattRE in the Indian market.

They have collaborated with Zest money to provide EMI solutions to new customers. Even people with no CIBIL score can buy BattRE scooters.

Talking about their future goals, Mr. Nishchal Choudhary said in an interview with industr.com that “Our short-term goal is that by the end of FY 2022, we would want to have a PAN India presence. As for our long-term goal, we look at being among the top four electric vehicle companies in the country by 2025”.

M2GO is an electric scooter manufacturing company in India. Mr. Deepak Gupta and Mr. Akshay Kumar (not the actor) founded this company in 2019.

It is based in New Delhi and has a manufacturing plant in Haryana, India.

M2GO has launched two electric scooters in India- M2GO Civitas and M2GO X1.

Civitas has a maximum speed of 85 Km/hr and a range of 120 kilometers per charge. While X1 has a maximum speed of 50km/hr and a range of 120 km.

Both the scooters have a Lithium-Ion battery. Both come with a variety of latest features.

M2GO CIVITAS

M2GO is a new startup. The company has not revealed much of its information related to investments, partnerships, and strategies.

Rowwet Mobility is one of the electric scooter manufacturing startups founded by Mr. Rahul Nahata in 2019. The startup is based in Pune, Maharashtra.

Director Rahul Nahata has more than 15 years of experience in the real estate business in Pune. Now he has entered the electric vehicles manufacturing business.

In November 2019 the company launched a range of electric two-wheelers including Rowwet Eleq, Rowwet Rame, Rowwet Zepop, Rowwet Vegatron, and Trono.

Trono is an electric bike, while the 4 others are electric scooters.

ROWWET ZEPOP

Depending on the features, the price ranges from Rs 51,000 to Rs 1,55,000. All the vehicles are available with three different battery options- Lithium-Ion, Lead-acid, and a patented ‘Click Battery’.

Click battery comes with a bigger charging capacity, which can be charged in just 12 minutes.

The company is aiming to sell 10,000 units per year. The first showroom was set up at Koregaon Park in Pune.  New showrooms will be established in Kolhapur, Ahmednagar, Satara, Sangli, and Aurangabad.

Rowwet is also planning to add 200 more franchises across India till 2021.

Techo Electra is one of the electric scooter companies in India. It was founded by Mr. Prakash Bhootra in 2017. It is a Pune based startup. The R&D is also done in Pune.

The manufacturing plant is located in Chakan, Pune and it has a capacity of producing 60,000 vehicles per year.

Till now, the startup has not raised any fundings. The founders have invested US$ 1 million and have planned to invest another Rs 30 crores in the next year.

They have launched 4 products for the domestic Indian market. Emerge, Neo, and Raptor are the electric scooters. In August 2020, they launched Saathi, an e-moped.

TECHO ELECTRA EMERGE

All the products are designed with different performance, range, and price to provide variety to customers. The Research & Development team is working steadily to provide trustworthy options for batteries, motors, and all other elements.

They are also doing some AI-related research and will apply them to their vehicles. 

Techo Electra imports batteries from foreign companies with a good track record. They say that their battery has a 5-year life.

Currently, they have more than 50 dealers across the country. They have planned to get at least 200 dealers by 2021.

The Company is working to launch 3-4 new two-wheeler models in the next year and expand its presence across 100 cities.

Crayon Motors is an Indian electric scooter manufacturer. Brothers Rahul Jain and Mayank Jain run this company. Crayon motors have a sister company named U.P Telelinks, which manufactures electric three-wheeler rickshaws ‘Singham’ in India.

The startup is based in Uttarakhand, India. The manufacturing unit is located in Pantnagar, with about 250 employees.   

The company’s main motto is ‘Electric mobility for all’. They aim to provide good quality and cost-effective products. 

CRAYON ZEEZ

Presently, Crayon Motors have five products for the Indian market. Zeez, Envy, and Snow are the electric scooters. Ringo and Ting are the two e-mopeds launched by them.

All of them are low-speed vehicles and have a max speed of 25km/hr.

Crayon Motors have launched a very good initiative, known as ‘Plant a tree initiative’ in which they plant a tree for every vehicle sold. Once the customer registers their scooter on their official website, they plant a tree.

Kabira Mobility is an Indian electric scooter manufacturing startup based in the state of Goa. Mr. Jaibir S is the CEO of the company. It was founded in 2017.

Kabira Mobility has two manufacturing plants across India at Verna, Goa & Dharwad, Karnataka. Also, their third manufacturing factory is expected to be ready by March 2021.

After that their production capacity will increase to 1,25,000 EV’s per month.

They have launched 6 e-scooters till now, named as Intercity Aeolus, Kollegio Neo, Kollegio +, Aetos 100, Intercity Neo, and Kollegio. Also, their e-bike KM3000 will be launched very soon.

Low-speed e-scooters such as Kollegio, Kollegio Neo, and Kollegio Plus are manufactured at the Goa factory. While Intercity, Intercity Neo, and KM 3000 are made at the Dharwad manufacturing plant.

The price of all the products ranges from Rs 42,900 to Rs 1,12,990. All the products are sold at their authorized store named HELLO EV.

They have invested Rs 300 crores in this company.

In the future, they are planning to launch the e-bike KM4000 with a range of more than 120 km per charge.
