BATTERY

The battery is the powerhouse of an electric vehicle. Electricity produced by the rechargeable battery is used to power the motor, which then helps the scooter to move.

Types of Battery used in EVs

The types of batteries that are used in EVs are as follows-

  • Lithium-Ion Battery
  • Lead-Acid Battery
  • Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery
  • Ultracapacitors

Lithium-Ion Battery

Out of these batteries, EV manufacturers around the world use Lithium-Ion battery the most.

Li-Ion battery is the best choice because of many reasons.

  • High energy density: They can be recharged hundreds of times and are more stable.
  • Self-Discharge: The rate of self-discharge in Li-Ion cells is much lower than other rechargeable cells.
  • Cell Voltage: Li-Ion cells produce a voltage of 3.6 volts, which is very much higher than other options.
  • Longer lifespan: The lifespan of these batteries can be as long as eight years, which can save a large amount of money.
  • Fast charging time: Li-Ion batteries take less time to charge in comparison with other batteries.

All three scooters- Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak, and TVS iQube have a Li-Ion battery.

Ather 450X: It has an installed battery capacity of 2.9kWh, out of which 2.6kWh is usable. It comes with an advanced Battery Management System(BMS). The BMS helps the scooter to have a higher range, fast charging and increases the standby time.

Also, the battery has 21,700 Li-Ion cells. It comes with three years of warranty, and it is IP67 protected.

Bajaj Chetak: The battery capacity of chetak is 3kWh(48V, 60.3 AH). It has NCA cells (nickel cobalt aluminium oxide).

The company claims that chetak’s battery has a life of 70,000 km. It comes with a warranty of 3 years or 50,000kms. It is also IP67 protected.

TVS iQube: It has three battery packs, with an installed capacity of 2.6kWh and a usable capacity of 2.25kWh. The battery has an aluminium casing and is IP67 protected.

It also has a BMS, which regulates the temperature and provides the best performance. The battery has a life of 50,000 km. It has an inbuilt voltage fluctuation protection. So, it is safe to charge during voltage fluctuations.

It comes with a warranty of 3 years or 50,000kms.

Battery type Capacity IP67 BMS Warranty
Ather 450X Li-Ion 2.9 kWh yes yes 3 years
Bajaj Chetak Li-Ion 3 kWh yes yes 3 years/ 50,000km
TVS iQube Li-Ion 2.6 kWh yes yes 3 years/ 50,000km

RANGE

The range of an e-scooter is the number of kilometres it can travel with a fully charged battery. It mainly depends on the average speed of the vehicle.

Ather 450X: It has three different modes- Eco, Ride, and Sport. You will get a distinct range in these three modes.

  • Eco mode has a range of 85 km.
  • Ride mode has a range of 70km.
  • Sports mode has a range of 55 km.

On average, if you drive your scooter for 30km per day, then full charging will last for two days.

Bajaj Chetak: It has a range of 95 km/charge, which means if you drive your scooter for 30km per day, then full charging will last for three days.

TVS iQube: It has two different modes- Eco and Power.

  • In eco mode, you will get a range of 75km/charge.
  • In power mode, you will get a range of 55km/charge.

So, you can drive a fully charged vehicle for two days if you drive 30km/day.

CHARGING

Nowadays, charging an electric scooter is as easy as charging a mobile phone. All you need is a 5A plug point to recharge most of the e-scooters.

But, fast charging an EV is a big problem in India. Fast public chargers are only available in few cities such as Bangalore, Chennai, and Pune.

That is why most of the companies don’t give a fast charging option in their scooters.

Let’s look at these three scooters.

Ather 450X: You can charge it at any 5A plug point. Ather provides a home charger known as Ather Dot, which will be installed by the company in your home. The Ather Dot uses around 3 kWh of electricity to charge an Ather 450X. That means, one full charge may cost anywhere between ₹12 - ₹20. It takes 6-7 hours to recharge the battery at home.

Fast charging is available in Ather 450X. A fast public charger known as Ather Grid is available in cities where Ather delivers its product. It charges with a speed of 1.45km per minute. In just an hour, you can completely recharge the battery from 0-100% at Ather Grid.

You have to pay a subscription fee per month to use Ather Grid.

Bajaj Chetak: The scooter comes with a home charger, which takes five hours for a complete 100% charge. In 1 hour, the battery gets 25% charged. You can travel for 23 km with 1 hour of charging.

Fast charging is not available in Chetak.

TVS iQube: You can charge this scooter with any 5A plug point. It takes 6 hours for a complete 100% charging. The home charger comes with the scooter.

The fast charging option is not available on iQube.

MOTOR

The DC electric motor plays an essential role in your electric scooter.

It impacts the top speed, acceleration, power consumption, hill-climbing ability, and performance.

Watts represents the power of a motor. That means motor with high watts will accelerate more quickly, carry more rider weight, and climb steep hills.

Motor Power

Every motor has two kinds of power- Peak power and Sustained or Continuous power.

Peak power is the maximum amount of power the motor can utilize for a short period. It helps during acceleration.

Meanwhile, Sustained power is the highest amount of power the motor can consume continually.

It is one of the most useful measures to compare e-scooters.

Ather 450X: It has PMS(Permanent Magnet Synchronous) motor, with a peak power of 6kW and continuous power of 3.3 kW.

Bajaj Chetak: It has a BLDC(Brushless DC) motor. The continuous rating is 3.8kW, and the peak rating is 4.08kW.

iQube: It also has a BLDC(Brushless DC) motor, with a peak power of 4.4kW and continuous power of 3kW.

Motor type Peak power Continuous power
Ather 450X PMS 6 kW 3.3 kW
Bajaj Chetak BLDC 4.08 kW 3.8 kW
TVS iQube BLDC 4.4 kW 3 kW
